Which is the best fuel loyalty scheme for motorists? We run the rule over the likes of ShellGo+, BPMe plus all the supermarket forecourt schemes.
Regularly popping to the forecourt to fill up is a necessary, but costly, trip for all motorists.
Thankfully, there are many loyalty schemes you can take advantage of.
While you can’t dodge that trip to the pump, you can at least get a little something back when you fill up by using these schemes.
BP has just launched its BPme Rewards scheme, alongside its new BPme app.
You swipe your rewards card at the till when paying for your fuel ‒ or for anything else you’re purchasing at the BP forecourt ‒ and you are rewarded with points.
You get one point for every litre of regular fuel, doubling to two points if you go for a litre of the Ultimate range of fuel.
You get a further point for every £1 spent in the shop, and for every £1 spent at the car wash.
200 points will get you £1 off the next time you fill up, or you can cash them in for a range of other benefits, such as gift cards for M&S and Amazon, or items from a ‘gift catalogue’.
For example, you can get a Russell Hobbs sandwich maker for 4,200 points (or 1,677 points plus a £12.58 cash payment).
You’ll also get a bonus 250 points when you register your BPme card.
Shell has recently announced it is doing away with its old Drivers’ Club, replacing it with a new reward scheme, ShellGo+.
Rather than have to worry about racking up points, ShellGo+ rewards you with money off your fuel spend every ten visits.
A visit is classed as anytime you spend at least £10 on fuel or £2 in the shop ‒ you just need to scan your scheme card, app or fob for the visit to be counted.
On top of that you get 10% off on certain food, such as its deli2go range, as well as 10% off hot drinks on every visit.
If you’re an existing member of the Shell Drivers’ Club, you can convert unused points into a chosen reward – providing your account is registered.
Texaco Star Rewards
With Texaco’s Star Rewards scheme, drivers can save one point for every litre of fuel purchased.
Each point is worth 1p, and once you’ve collected 500 points you can convert them into Texaco vouchers, or gift cards for the likes of Argos and M&S.
You’ll get a bonus 75 points just for registering the card as well.
More is Morrisons’ loyalty scheme, which rewards shoppers with five points for every £1 they spend in store.
You also get five points for every £1 spent on fuel at one of Morrisons’ forecourts. For every 5,000 points you earn, members of the scheme get a £5 voucher to spend in store.
Nectar is one of the nation’s most popular loyalty schemes, and shoppers can rack up points when they fill up in certain forecourts.
Obviously, this will include Sainsbury’s forecourts, as the supermarket is perhaps the most well-known Nectar partner.
But the scheme has also recently enticed Esso to switch over from its previous partnership with Clubcard.
For every litre of fuel, you get one Nectar point.
You can then turn 500 points into a voucher worth £2.50, though with certain ‘bonus offers,’ you may get a greater return out of those points.
Finally, there’s Tesco’s Clubcard scheme.
You get one point for every £2 spent on fuel, and then you can convert 150 points into a £1.50 voucher.
While Esso has defected to the Nectar scheme, just to keep things a little confusing, you can still pick up Clubcard points when filling up at an Esso forecourt that has a Tesco Express attached to it.
Think about how you pay for your fuel
If you really want to maximise returns from the money spent at the pump, then it’s worth thinking carefully about precisely how you pay for your petrol or diesel.
There are a host of different credit cards that offer rewards when you spend cash, whether it’s through loyalty points or even straight forward cashback.
