Barclays to launch contactless cash withdrawals in the UK

Updated on 24 November 2016 | 2 Comments

Barclays customers will soon be able to withdraw cash with just a tap of their debit card or swipe of their smartphone.

Withdrawing cash is about to get faster and more secure thanks to new cash machines developed by Barclays.

The high street bank has designed new ATMs that allow customers to withdraw money using contactless technology.

Barclays says around 100 new cash machines will be piloted in “the North”, before being launched at 180 Barclays branches across the country in the New Year.

Safer way to draw money

With the new Contactless Cash machines, Barclays customers with an Android phone or contactless debit card will be able to withdraw money in three ways.

They can tap the amount they want and their pin into their Barclays Mobile Banking app then tap the cash machine to get the money, or they can tap their phone or card on the machine then complete the transaction on the ATM.

The hope is that by using contactless technology customers will be able to speed up the process of withdrawing cash.

The other aim is to increase bank security. Contactless withdrawals remove the risk of customers having their debit cards skimmed by criminals who can then steal their money.

It also reduces the possibility of criminals distracting you at the cashpoint and swiping your debit card or cash.

“We are always looking for new ways to make our customers lives easier and their finances even more secure,” says Ashok Vaswani, CEO of Barclays UK.

“Our customers now expect to be able to use their smartphones to make their everyday purchases.

“We want taking out cash to be just as easy. With Contactless Cash, customers can quickly and securely take out money with just a tap of their smartphone – a first for the UK.”

How it works

Debit card users: Simply tap your contactless card on the machine’s reader then follow instructions on the ATM to complete your withdrawal.

Android Users option one: Open the Barclays Mobile Banking app and select the Contactless Cash option. Then select how much money you want to withdraw and enter your pin into the app. You then have 30 seconds to tap your phone on the ATM and collect your cash.

Android Users option two: Tap phone on the ATM’s contactless reader  and “Your request has been sent” will appear on smartphone screen. Then enter pin into machine and follow the onscreen instructions to withdraw money.

For either of the Android option to work you need to have added your debit card details into the app via the Contactless Cash option.
