Big US cities and counties that have gone bust
Detroit famously declared itself bankrupt in 2013, but it’s by no means alone. While not very common, cities, townsand counties can file Chapter 9 Bankruptcy when unable to pay their bills. In 2016, more than 60 cities in the US did not have enough money to pay all of their bills, racking up a grand total of $335.4 billion in unfunded municipal debt, according to Truth for Accounting.
