Cheap supermarket deals: Sainsbury’s cuts 1,000 prices

In a move to spark a new supermarket price war, Sainsbury’s has cut the price of 930 everyday groceries. So how does it compare to rivals?

By cutting almost 1,000 prices Sainsbury's says 12 million customers will be better off with the weekly shop costing £5 less for the average family.

The supermarket has said customers will benefit from lower prices across their weekly shop including own-brand food ranges and branded household items.

The new prices will make family meals cheaper, according to Sainsbury’s, with savings on cereals, veg, meat, cheese and pasta as well as ready meals.

A whole chicken from Sainsbury’s is now cheaper than at some competitors, with a 1.6kg bird costing £3.65 compared to £6 at Tesco and £4.00 at Morrisons. However, it still can't beat discounter Aldi, where a similar-sized bird will set you back just £2.99.

Mature cheddar is now cheaper at Sainsbury’s than at Tesco, costing £2 for 400g at the former and £2.70 at the latter. However, Aldi again comes out cheaper, with a 350g block costing £1.69, making it cheaper per kg.

So while Sainsbury's now prices more competitively against its traditional rivals, it still can't compete with the German discounters.

Not just in the food aisle

It isn’t just food that has seen prices slashed, everyday toiletries and household items are also cheaper after the price cuts.

For example, Dove bodywash costs £2 for 500ml at Sainsbury’s compared to £3 at Tesco and Asda.

Sainsbury’s estimates that a typical weekly family shop will be £4.95 cheaper as a result of the price cuts, which is a fall of 8% from £62.88 to £57.93.

“We know our customers choose to shop at Sainsbury’s for our fantastic quality and choice,” says Sainsbury’s CEO Mike Coupe.

“These low prices now give customers more reasons to visit our stores.”
