It’s the season of goodwill and more than a third of us still spread the festive cheer by handing out Christmas tips.

Research by Clydesdale and Yorkshire Banks found that 36% of us will thank our postman, bin men and teachers with either money or a gift this year.

Postmen are the most likely workers to receive a tip with 17% of us saying we’ll be giving something to the person who’s delivered all those Christmas gifts and cards. Bin men can also expect some seasonal gratitude, with 12% of us planning to thank them. Finally, 7% of us will show our appreciation for our children’s teachers with a gift or cash.

The survey also found that for most people presents will be their most significant outgoing, though in London almost four in ten people will spend more on festive socialising than gifts for their loved ones.
