Three major supermarkets have cut the price of diesel at their petrol stations, sparking talk of a new price war.
Asda, Tesco and Sainsbury’s have all cut the cost by 2p a litre, effective from today.
As a result of Asda’s national price cap, motorists will no longer pay more than 114.7p per litre for either unleaded or diesel.
There has been anger among diesel drivers as petrol prices have dropped by far more than diesel in recent months, even dipping below £1 a litre at one point.
[SPOTLIGHT]The latest figures from PetrolPrices.com show the average diesel price at 120.43p per litre, while the average price of a litre of unleaded is 117.10p.
Simon Williams, fuel spokesman for the RAC, said that wholesale diesel prices have been significantly lower than petrol throughout June, and argued there is scope for at least a 5p per litre cut in the price of diesel.
“We need greater transparency and a fairer pricing model for both petrol and diesel and this is likely to spell the end of the focus on petrol prices alone,” he added.
