Get more for your money from your life insurance policy.

The key benefits of life insurance are not usually reaped by the policy holder.

But nevertheless, there are still a range of bonus perks, from counselling services to legal advice that could prove useful throughout your life.

Advice and counselling

Several insurers now offer helplines and counselling services to all customers.

AIG Life (formerly Ageas) policies include access to Winston’s Wish, a charity which helps bereaved children, young people and their parents or carers cope when there’s a death or diagnosis of a terminal illness in the family.

Bright Grey provides a legal, medical and career helpline to all customers. The insurer’s ‘helping hand’ service also offers access the support of nurse advisers. Your nurse can arrange therapies or counselling to help you or your family cope with illness or the trauma of bereavement.

Beagle Street offers counselling from FirstAssist which features a telephone and online service offering counselling on everything from bereavement and relationship difficulties to money and work worries.

LV= has a 24-hour member Care Line which can help with criminal and civil law queries, health and medical questions provided by a team of doctors and nurses and counselling on everything from, bereavement to relationship difficulties.

Scottish Provident has the Lifeline helpline for things like legal issues, tax questions and counselling, as well as the Working Transitions helpline which offers advice on things like your CV, interview techniques and state benefits.

Second opinion

AIG Life (formerly Ageas) and Friends Life, policies come with the Best Doctors service. This gives you access to a second opinion from over 50,000 medical specialists worldwide.

Discounts

Aviva offers Aviva Advantages to policyholders, which includes a range of discounts and exclusive prize draws. For example you can currently save up to 25% on gym memberships, 50% on MOTs, 20% off Virgin Experience Days and enter a prize draw for Premier League tickets.

Similarly MORE TH>N customers get access to MORE 4ME, which offers a range of discounts and deals. Popular offers available at the moment include 10% off at Cottages4you and 20% off Virgin Experience Days.

You can get all sorts of discounts with Vitality (formerly PruProtect), such as 50% off gym membership or half-price bikes at Evans Cycle stores. And if you take steps to improve your health, you can get freebies like cinema tickets or coffee from Starbucks.

Free will

Take out life insurance with Beagle Street and you will be able to get a free will from Minster Law.

Vouchers

Some providers offer vouchers as incentives to take out a policy.

Aviva is offering £75 worth of Amazon vouchers with its life cover. You’ll get your voucher after your fifth monthly payment. The offer is only available online and must be applied for direct.

Take out life insurance with Legal & General online before 30th November 2015 and you’ll get a £75 Marks & Spencer voucher. Apply over the phone and you get £30. Again this offer is only available if you apply direct.

Home move cover

For customers who take out a life insurance policy that covers their mortgage, Legal & General will throw in a 24-hour moving home service called SmoothMove.

This cover provides car recovery, a replacement removal van and emergency hotel accommodation if anything goes wrong on your moving day.

Children's critical illness cover

This is offered by many insurers if you take out critical illness cover alongside your life insurance policy. It allows you to take time off work or pay for private treatment if one of your children is diagnosed with a critical illness.

The conditions covered and small print varies between providers, so make sure you read every last word of your prospective policy documents before signing up.
