The cheapest cars to insure in 2018

Updated on 09 February 2018 | 3 Comments

If you are thinking about buying a new car you may want to keep your costs down by choosing a car that is going to be cheap to insure.

The average price paid for comprehensive car insurance is now £493, according to the Association of British Insurers (ABI).

That’s the highest it has been since the ABI started collecting data back in 2012.

“The rising cost of motor insurance shows no sign of abating,” says Rob Cummings, ABI’s assistant director and head of motor and liability.

“Changes to how compensation payouts are calculated, Insurance Premium Tax, more whiplash-style claims and rising repair bills are all piling on the pressure for cash-strapped drivers.”

If you are looking to keep your costs down you may want to consider buying a Skoda Yeti. It is the cheapest car in the UK to insure, according to Comparethemarket.

The comparison website has studied all the car insurance quotes made through its website and revealed the cars with the lowest average quote, when more than 1,000 enquiries were made.

While there are a whole variety of factors that determine what premiums you’ll pay for your car insurance, choosing one of these cars should help keep your costs down.

Everything from where you live to your age and what your occupation is all factor into how much risk an insurance firm thinks you will be, and therefore how high your premiums will be.

Skoda takes the top spot

You can no longer buy a new one, but if you pick up a second-hand Skoda Yeti you stand a good chance of getting a pleasingly low car insurance bill.

When 1,000 Comparethemarket customers put in the details of a Skoda Yeti to get a car insurance quote it came out with the lowest average annual premium at just £456.49.

It is closely followed by the Skoda Roomster, another discontinued model that offers great value for money when it comes to car insurance with an average annual premium of £481.44.

Kia is consistently cheap

The Kia Venga proves itself to be consistently cheap to insure with three different models – the Venga 3, Venga 1 and Venga 2 – all making it into the top 25 cheapest cars to insure.

Don’t accept the average

While this table shows the average annual price for insuring these cars there is a chance you could get your car insured for even less with Comparethemarket pointing out that the gap between the average insurance premium and the cheapest one is getting wider and wider.

“Over the past five years, we’ve seen non-stop cost pressures on British drivers, who still face ever-increasing premiums,” says Simon McCulloch, director of Comparethemarket.

“The gap between the average and cheapest premiums is now at record levels, at an average £129, showing the very real savings that can be made by switching providers.”

So, choose your car wisely and shop around and you could shave a big chunk off your car insurance costs.
