A new survey by property portal Rightmove has revealed the happiest places to live in Britain. Respondents were asked to rank towns based on 12 criteria, ranging from how friendly the neighbours are to the quality of local services. These are the 10 places in Britain which performed the strongest. For each, we'll also show you how much home you can get for your money – just in case you were thinking of relocating!

In 10th spot on the Rightmove list is the cathedral town of Chichester, located in West Sussex. The town is very popular with commuters, as it has decent links not only into London, but Southampton and Portsmouth too.

According to Rightmove, the average property in Chichester costs £375,000, with prices having increased 3% over the past year. With the national average house price sitting at £226,000 according to the Office for National Statistics, buyers will need to dig deep in order to buy a home here. As an example of what that money gets, this two-bedroom cottage is currently listed on Zoopla for £349,950.

The coastal town of Poole in Dorset is the top-placed town from the South West in Rightmove’s study, taking ninth position overall. Poole is home to the incredibly-expensive peninsula of Sandbanks, one of the priciest places in the world to live.

Property in Poole costs an average of £337,501, according to Rightmove, significantly above the national average of £226,000 reported by the Office for National Statistics. That money could get you a home like this four-bedroom bungalow, currently listed for sale on Zoopla at £325,000.

In eighth place is the London Borough of Richmond-upon-Thames, the only borough located on both sides of the river Thames. A big selling point of the area is the sheer amount of parkland contained within the town, from Richmond Park to Kew Gardens.

The average price of a property in Richmond is a huge £811,279, more than three times the national average. That money can get you a beautiful home though, such as this two-bedroom flat, which is listed on Zoopla for £825,000.

Epsom in Surrey is perhaps most famous for playing host to The Derby, one of the world’s most famous horse racing events. Located a short distance from the capital, Epsom has previously been named one of the best commuter towns for people working in London, not just because of its excellent transport links but also its terrific schools.

According to Rightmove, the average property in Epsom currently costs an average of £510,989, having jumped 9% over the past year. As an example of what you can get for that money, this three-bedroom property is listed for sale for £515,000 on Zoopla.

The market town of King’s Lynn in Norfolk is located close to the royal country estate of Sandringham and has been one of the nation’s most important ports for centuries, with famous former residents including Queen drummer Roger Taylor and racing driver Martin Brundle.

The average price of a property in King’s Lynn is £160,420, according to Rightmove. Prices in the area have actually fallen by 9% over the last year. As an example of what you can get for that money, this three-bedroom property is listed for sale at £165,000 on Zoopla.

Tunbridge Wells came in fifth place, one of a host of spa towns to perform well in the survey. Located in Kent, close to the East Sussex border, Tunbridge Wells gained the ‘Royal’ prefix due to its popularity with aristocratic visitors at the start of the 20th century.

According to Rightmove, the average property in Tunbridge Wells costs a massive £437,723, almost double the UK average price of £226,000. That money can get you a beautiful home, such as this three-bedroom semi-detached property, listed for £450,000 on Zoopla. 

Harrogate in North Yorkshire topped Rightmove’s table for three straight years between 2013 and 2015 and is one of the few towns to make the top 10 that isn't in the South East. Located on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales, Harrogate is a popular town with commuters working in Bradford and Leeds.

Properties in Harrogate have increased 3% over the past year according to Rightmove, reaching £321,412, much higher than the national average. As an example of what that money can get you, this two-bedroom bungalow is currently listed at £320,000 with Zoopla. 

The Wirral came third in the study, the only town in the North West to make it into the top 10. The town enjoys excellent transport links to places like Chester and has been home to celebrities as diverse as Daniel Craig and John Peel.

The average property in The Wirral costs £184,000 according to Rightmove, significantly less than the national average of £226,000. That money can go a long way too, as this two-bedroom detached house, listed for sale on Zoopla for £169,995, demonstrates.

The seaside town of Leigh-on-Sea in Essex was last year’s winner, but dropped to second place this time around. It scored extremely well for local services like schools and doctors, strong community spirit, good pubs and restaurants and friendly neighbours.

According to Rightmove, properties in the town come with an average price of £360,000, having jumped 10% in the last year – well above what the ONS reckons is the average for the UK as a whole (£226,000). As an example of what your money gets you, this three-bedroom flat is currently listed for sale on Zoopla for £375,000.

The town of Royal Leamington Spa in Warwickshire topped the tabled of happiest places to live, with the area scoring apparently boasting friendly neighbours, a strong sense of belonging, a place where locals feel they can be themselves and good access to nature and green spaces.

Sadly, it seems a 'sense of belonging' doesn't come cheap: property in Royal Leamington Spa costs around £316,000, according to Rightmove, having increased by 20% since 2014. As an example of what you get for your money, this three-bed semi-detached house is currently listed for sale on Zoopla for £300,000. We're sure the neighbours are lovely, too...
