Fake £1 coin - Hand it in to a police station - ARE YOU SERIOUS?

I just read your article about how to spot a fake £1 coin. Thank you it was very interesting. I have to laugh through at your comment at the end that if you find one, you should hand it in to the local police station. SERIOUSLY? So I find one in my purse and suspect it to be a fake, I walk in to a police station and get looked at as if I am some form of simpleton. I tell them I think I found a fake £1 coin. Here you are and I hand it over. Really - what will they do? I will have no idea where I got it from and acquired it by legal means. So the police take it from me - I am £1 poorer through no fault of my own and will they question me on suspicion of fraud or just look at me as if I am a wierdo. No, seriously - what will they do apart from make me £1 poorer? Logically better not to check in the first place and remain blissfully aware as once you know, you are then guilty of fraud yourself I would guess, if you pass it on knowingly. I for one would act decidedly dodgy handing over a dodgy coin. There is no way you can stand in a shop every time you are given a handful of change and hold up the whole queue while you check each coin. Simply not going to happen. Bliss is ignorance and the best way forward I think. Any comments welcome. :)
