E.ON free wall and loft insulation scheme now open to all

E.ON is offering free insulation to everyone – you don’t even have to be one of their customers to benefit. It’s a good deal – so good I was late filing this article as I was busy applying!

Energy firm E.ON has opened up its free loft and cavity wall insulation scheme to everyone.

Previously, the scheme – which is worth around £775 per household – was only available to people who receive certain benefits.

Who can get it?

Now the only restriction is on whether your home is suitable, i.e. you have cavity walls that can be filled with insulation and you don’t already have sufficient insulation.

You don’t even have to own your home – private tenants can also apply as long as they have their landlord’s permission.

Landlords can also apply to have the insulation installed in their buy-to-let properties.

How much can you save?

Almost a third of all heat lost in uninsulated homes escapes through the walls, with a further quarter disappearing through the roof.

E.ON estimates that the average household could save up to £285 a year on their heating bills by installing both cavity wall and loft insulation.

Combine that with the £775 saving on buying and installing the insulation and it adds up to a £1,000 saving in the first year.

“We’ve offered free insulation to people on qualifying benefits for many years as part of our government obligations and we know insulation is a crucial first step in making our homes more comfortable and cheaper to run,” says Michael Lewis, E.ON UK’s chief executive.

“By opening the offer up to everyone, no matter who supplies their energy or what their financial circumstances are, we hope that many more people can benefit.”

It’s a good deal!

I’m in the middle of doing up an old property and anything that eases a very tight budget is of interest.

So, after reading E.ON’s press release I was straight onto the website to apply. Within 20 minutes I’d had a call back to discuss my property.

The lady on the phone brought up the most recent energy certificate for my home and stated that as I had no cavity wall insulation they would arrange a home visit.

Unfortunately, I told her the energy report must be wrong as during building works we’ve had the pesky cavity wall insulation beads spilling everywhere. I said we were only interested in the loft insulation.

Unfortunately, the deal is only available to people who need both cavity wall and loft insulation so I was turned down.

But, I have been left with some hope. “We aren’t offering cavity wall insulation top ups at the moment,” said the customer services advisor.

In the meanwhile, I continue my hunt for the best 0% deal on a new boiler.

Act fast

The number of households that can benefit from the offer isn’t capped, but E.ON has warned that the deal won’t be available for ever.

As it is the only energy firm offering free insulation to everyone it is going to be a hugely popular deal, so act fast to make sure you don’t miss out.

“This offer won’t be available forever so we’d urge anyone who’s interested to get in touch now to avoid missing out,” says Lewis.

To be eligible for the free cavity wall insulation you must have cavity walls that haven’t already been filled with cavity wall insulation.

To claim the free loft insulation your loft must not already have insulation that is more than 100mm thick and there must be enough ventilation in your loft to allow air to flow through the space after the new insulation is added.

If you are eligible Eon will install loft insulation that is 270mm thick – the maximum recommended.

You cannot get the loft or wall insulation on their own – the deal is only for both.
