The US boasts 868 individuals with 10-figure fortunes – more than any other nation, according to the latest Forbes list. But America's billionaires don't call every corner of the country home, tending instead to cluster in key hotspots that offer everything from favorable tax regimes to top-tier luxury living and world-class amenities.
So, where are these prime locations? Read on to discover the 20 states with the biggest billionaire populations.
Revealing America's billionaire distribution

America is a land of contrasts when it comes to its wealthiest denizens. Three states – Alaska, Delaware, and West Virginia – have no billionaires to speak of, while 10 have one apiece: Alabama, Idaho, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, New Mexico, North Dakota, Rhode Island, South Dakota, and Vermont.
At the other end of the spectrum, almost two-thirds of the country's billionaires reside in just four states, with one economic giant housing a particularly impressive number. Let's take a closer look...
=19. Ohio: 7 billionaires

Ohio has seven billionaires, barely 0.8% of the national total. Leading the pack is Buckeye born-and-bred retail mogul Les Wexner. The founder of L Brands, which counted Victoria's Secret and Bath & Body Works in its portfolio, Wexner is worth $7.9 billion.
Other standout billionaires in the state include Denise York and family, the majority owners of the San Francisco 49ers, and Vivek Ramaswamy (pictured), the biotech entrepreneur and Republican politician who worked with Elon Musk to set up DOGE.
=19. Wisconsin: 7 billionaires

Wisconsin is home to the same number of billionaires as Ohio, with a total of seven residing in the state.
Wisconsin is among the 10 states where a woman holds the top spot as its wealthiest resident, up from nine last year. Roofing materials tycoon Diane Hendricks leads the list with a net worth of $22.3 billion. She takes over from Menards founder John Menard Jr, who's now worth $21.7 billion.
18. Missouri: 8 billionaires

Missouri's billionaire count stands at eight. David Steward (pictured) is now the state's wealthiest person. The rags-to-riches founder of IT provider World Wide Technology, Steward is worth $11.4 billion, making him the richest Black American.
The rest of the list includes Bass Pro Shops boss Johnny Morris and Pauline MacMillan Keinath, who is thought to be the largest shareholder of food giant Cargill.
17. Michigan: 9 billionaires

Michigan has nine billionaire residents. Dan Gilbert, the co-founder of Quicken Loans and the owner of the Cleveland Cavaliers, is the richest with a fortune of $22.1 billion. Fellow mortgage tycoon Mat Ishbia holds second place. His net worth totals $7.4 billion.
Among Michigan's other billionaire names are the three Meijer brothers, owners of the namesake grocery chain, and Little Caesars Pizza co-founder Marian Ilitch.
16. Virginia: 10 billionaires

A woman sits atop Virginia's wealth pyramid. Jacqueline Mars (pictured), who owns a reported third of the eponymous candy and pet care behemoth, has a fortune of $38.8 billion.
In fact, women are relatively well-represented among Virginia's 10 billionaires. Jacqueline Mars' niece, Pamela Mars-Wright, is the runner-up with a fortune of $9.7 billion. SC Johnson scion Winifred J. Marquart also resides in the state, as does Sheila Johnson, the co-founder of BET and Salamander Hotels & Resorts CEO. Johnson is one of only two female African-American billionaires; the other is Oprah Winfrey.
15. Maryland: 11 billionaires

Neighboring Maryland has 11 billionaires worth a combined $35 billion. A woman also reigns supreme as the state's wealthiest individual. Real estate magnate Annette Lerner is number one with a fortune of $5.6 billion, though this wealth is shared with her family.
Maryland's other billionaires include Baltimore Orioles owner David Rubenstein and Under Armour CEO Kevin Plank, who are worth $3.9 billion and $1 billion respectively.
=13. Georgia: 12 billionaires

A total of 12 billionaires reside in Georgia. The state's frontrunners in the money stakes are the three Cathy siblings, Bubba (pictured), Dan, and Trudy Cathy White. The Chick-fil-A owners have a combined fortune of $33.6 billion.
Hot on their heels is Home Depot co-founder and Atlanta Falcons Chairman Arthur Blank, whose estimated wealth is $9 billion. Medtech tycoon John Brown and pest control king Gary Rollins are among the state's other billionaire names.
=13. Washington: 12 billionaires

A progressive tech hub with no income tax, Washington is super billionaire-friendly. Former Microsoft CEO and LA Clippers owner Steve Ballmer possesses the state's biggest fortune. The world's eighth-richest person, he's worth $130.5 billion.
Ballmer's erstwhile colleague Bill Gates is next with $113 billion, followed by his ex-wife, Melinda French Gates, who has $30.5 billion. Notably absent is former Washington resident Jeff Bezos, who quit the state for Florida in 2023, but his philanthropic former spouse, MacKenzie Scott, still lives in Seattle. Washington's fourth-richest person, she has a fortune of $29.5 billion.
12. Tennessee: 13 billionaires

Tennessee is one of the poorest states but within it lie pockets of extreme wealth – and a surprising 13 billionaires, according to the latest Forbes list.
Nashville's Thomas Frist Jr. and family are the richest residents with a fortune of $29.3 billion. Frist Jr. started Hospital Corp of America with his namesake father back in 1968. The most famous of Tennessee's billionaires is none other than Taylor Swift (pictured), who lists Nashville as her primary residence.
11. Colorado: 14 billionaires

The exclusive enclaves of Colorado, stretching from Aspen's peaks to Denver's Cherry Hills Village, provide the perfect backdrop for its community of 14 billionaires.
Veteran investor Philip Anschutz (pictured) is top dog with a fortune of $16.9 billion. He's followed by cable TV magnate John Malone, who is worth $10.8 billion, and venture capitalist Mark Stevens, who has $8.4 billion.
10. Arizona: 15 billionaires

Arizona is now home to 15 billionaires, up from 13 last year. The newcomers are George Christ and Rick Smith (pictured). The co-founder and second-largest individual shareholder of Altair Engineering, Christ cleaned up from the recent sale of the tech firm to Siemens. Together with his family, he's now worth $1.7 billion. Smith heads taser company Axon and holds an 8% stake in the firm. Axon stock has surged over the past year, pushing Smith's net worth up to $2.2 billion.
However, the richest Arizonan remains Ernest Garcia II, the leading shareholder of online used car retailer Carvana. His fortune amounts to $19.5 billion.
=8. Connecticut: 17 billionaires

A total of 17 billionaires reside in Connecticut, the majority in affluent Greenwich.
Hedge fund supremo and New York Mets owner Steve Cohen (pictured) is the wealthiest of the bunch, with a net worth of $21.3 billion. He's followed by fellow hedge fund legend Ray Dalio, who has $14 billion, and logistics bigwig Brad Jacobs with $12 billion.
=8. Nevada: 17 billionaires

Nevada's billionaires range from casino bosses to tech bros. The lion's share live in Las Vegas. Over the past year, the state has lost two, Sehat Sutardja and Elaine Wynne, with the figure now standing at 17 following their passing.
Outshining the rest in terms of wealth is Miriam Adelson, the widow of late Las Vegas Sands founder Sheldon Adelson. Together with her family, she owns half of the gambling juggernaut and has a net worth of $31.1 billion.
=5. Illinois: 22 billionaires

Likewise, the majority of Illinois' 22 billionaires live in or around the state's largest city, which is of course Chicago.
A diverse assortment, the 21 names include Walmart heir Lukas Walton, the richest of the lot with a fortune of $39.7 billion. Other prominent Prairie State billionaires range from Oprah Winfrey, whose primary residence is in the Windy City, to the Governor of Illinois, JB Pritzker, who is worth $3.7 billion.
=5. Massachusetts: 22 billionaires

Moneyed Massachusetts is also home to 22 billionaires, up from 20 last year. The newbies are Stephen Fredette, the boss of restaurant software company Toast, and property developer Bill Cumming. He's now worth a cool $1 billion, while Fredette has amassed $1.4 billion.
Abigail Johnson is still the richest by a long shot. The CEO of Fidelity Investments owns an estimated 28.5% of the Boston-based firm and has a fortune of $33.8 billion.
=5. Pennsylvania: 22 billionaires

Pennsylvania also has 22 billionaires, mainly in the Philadelphia area. The richest person in the state lives just outside the city in Haverford: Jeff Yass, the co-founder of the Midas-touch trading firm Susquehanna International Group. His net worth amounts to $59 billion.
Other noteworthy Pennsylvania billionaires include heiress Mary Alice Dorrance Malone (pictured), the largest shareholder of the Campbell Soup Company, who's worth $3.7 billion.
4. Texas: 81 billionaires

Texas is something of a paradise for the ultra-rich, thanks to factors such as its lack of income and inheritance taxes, as well as other financial advantages. No wonder it has so many billionaires, with the number totaling 81. In 2021, Elon Musk famously quit California for the Lone Star State and remains its richest resident with a world-beating net worth of $409.4 billion.
Texas native Michael Dell comes second with $109.5 billion, followed by Walmart heiress Alice Walton, who has a fortune of $106 billion. Other billionaires who call Texas home include Stan and Ann Kroenke, Jerry Jones, and Mark Cuban.
3. Florida: 116 billionaires

The abundance of billionaire enclaves in Florida such as Palm Beach and Fisher Island is no accident. Billionaires are drawn to the state by factors such as its year-round summer climate and luxurious coastal living, but the major pull is the absence of state income and capital gains taxes.
Jeff Bezos has reportedly saved over a billion dollars in taxes after moving to the state last year. He's now its wealthiest person, with a net worth of $228.1 billion. But Bezos isn't Florida's most famous billionaire. That would have to be President Donald Trump, whose official residence is Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach. The POTUS' fortune stands at $5.5 billion.
2. New York: 137 billionaires

New York's tax regime may not be all that billionaire-friendly, but the uber-rich can't get enough of living in the Big Apple and its environs, which have everything they could want and more. On top of this, as a major global financial hub, New York City naturally attracts immense wealth. In fact, the City that Never Sleeps has more billionaires than any other in the world at 123.
Gotham's former mayor Michael Bloomberg is the richest resident. The media mogul-turned-politician is worth $104.7 billion. Other billionaire New Yorkers include Rupert Murdoch, Jay-Z, and Jerry Seinfeld, who joined the club this year.
1. California: 194 billionaires

California also offers the lifestyle the 0.001% seek out – and despite slapping the super-rich with more taxes than many states, it has the most billionaires in America at a jaw-dropping 194, 22% of the national total. The state's status as the epicenter of the global tech and entertainment industries helps too.
With a net worth of $227.7 billion, Mark Zuckerberg is the wealthiest Californian, and tech bros make up much of the billionaire population. But the Golden State is also awash with celebrity billionaires, from Kim Kardashian, Rihanna, and Arnold Schwarzenegger, to Steven Spielberg and LeBron James.
