In recent years, Detroit has achieved a significant historic milestone – its population is growing again. In 2024, the city recorded its first Census-estimated population increase since the late 1950s. It then recorded additional population gains in 2025, making it three consecutive years of growth according to the latest Census estimates.

While the auto industry remains central to the city's fortunes, it has diversified, with growing strengths in the software, healthcare, and battery research sectors. Detroit may still have a long way to go – but it certainly seems on track to becoming the dynamic, successful city it once was.
