A profile published in The New York Times shortly before her incarceration found that the Elizabeth Holmes with the baritone voice and wardrobe of black turtlenecks had gone; prior to her jailing, she had become Liz, a mother of two who loved spending time with her family at the zoo.

Writer Amy Chozick received backlash for the interview after its publication, but didn't shy away from the possibility that 'Liz' was just another character Holmes had created. "Ms Holmes is unlike anyone I've ever met – modest but mesmerizing," Chozick wrote. "If you are in her presence, it is impossible not to believe her, not to be taken with her and be taken in by her".
