Taking the top spot by a long shot as the highest-grossing music biopic is Bohemian Rhapsody (2018), which chronicles the life of the late Freddie Mercury, the lead singer of the rock band Queen. It grossed $910 million on release, or an incredible $1.1 billion (£816m) today.

The film was directed by Bryan Singer and starred Rami Malek as Mercury in an Oscar-winning performance. It also featured Gwilym Lee as guitarist Brian May, Ben Hardy as drummer Roger Taylor and Joe Mazzello as bassist John Deacon.

A critical darling, the film received five Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, and won four Academy Awards (including Best Actor for Malek), more than any other film that year. Meanwhile, the soundtrack peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200.
