On to another live-action disaster. Even before its release, Disney’s remake of its 2016 animated classic was the butt of some stinging jokes. Dwayne Johnson’s odd-looking wig prompted Weird Al Yankovic to post a photo suggesting The Rock could be in the running to play him in the Weird Al biopic sequel. The trailer’s heavy reliance on CGI also attracted criticism.

Released in July this year, Moana has so far grossed $230 million (£173m) worldwide. However, its $250 million (£188m) production budget places it among the most expensive movies ever made, and estimates suggest it may cost the studio well over $100 million (£75.2m) when additional costs such as marketing are factored in.

The remake’s proximity to the original has been cited as a reason for its poor performance, with that movie and 2024’s wildly successful Moana 2 still fresh in audiences' minds. Enthusiasm for Johnson may also be on the wane, with Moana marking another low point on a downward trajectory of flops.
