Formed in Los Angeles in 1985 from the remnants of L.A. Guns and Hollywood Rose, Guns N' Roses exploded onto the rock scene with Appetite for Destruction. The 1987 debut sold 30 million copies and spawned classics including Sweet Child O' Mine and Paradise City.
Four more studio albums followed amid controversy and constant lineup changes, culminating in 2008's Chinese Democracy, the most expensive rock album ever made. Despite zero follow-up, hugely lucrative touring has kept the band going strong.

Guns N' Roses' constantly changing lineup includes several musicians whose fortunes haven't been reliably estimated. Drummer Rob Gardner and bassist Ole Beich were part of the band's original 1985 lineup, but both departed before Appetite for Destruction. Beich tragically drowned in Copenhagen in 1991.
Later came guitarist Paul Tobias, who served from 1994 to 2002, and Nine Inch Nails guitarist Robin Finck, whose two stints ran from 1997 to 1999 and 2000 to 2008. Former Replacements bassist Tommy Stinson (pictured) joined in 1998 and remained through 2014, while multi-instrumentalist Chris Pitman was a member from 1998 to 2016.
The revolving door continued into the noughties. Drummer Bryan Mantia, aka Brain (pictured), joined in 2000 and remained until 2006, while guitarist Richard Fortus replaced Paul Tobias in 2002 and is still with the band.
Frank Ferrer came aboard in 2006 and was Guns N' Roses' longest-serving drummer before departing in 2025, when Isaac Carpenter took his place. Keyboardist Melissa Reese has been a member since 2016, though she's sitting out the band's 2026 tour.
Tracii Guns gave Guns N' Roses half of their name, having co-founded the band in 1985 when his group L.A. Guns merged with Axl Rose and Izzy Stradlin's Hollywood Rose. But as tensions rose with Rose, Guns departed after several shows, with Slash taking his place.
Guns went on to reform L.A. Guns, scoring success with albums including Cocked & Loaded and Hollywood Vampires. In 2025, the star revealed he might consider rejoining GNR if asked but added that he'd prefer L.A. Guns to open and then join his former band for a song.
Famed for his virtuoso playing, expressionless mask and trademark KFC bucket, Buckethead joined Guns N' Roses as lead guitarist in 2000. Although he departed four years later, his work featured extensively on 2008's Chinese Democracy, which cost an eye-watering $13 million (£9.6m) to produce but sold a relatively disappointing 2.7 million copies.
Away from GNR, the extraordinarily prolific musician, whose real name is Brian Patrick Carroll, has recorded more than 600 studio albums and worked with artists including Iggy Pop, Bootsy Collins and Serj Tankian. His many other projects include Praxis and Cornbugs, as well as an extensive solo career.
Drummer Josh Freese became part of Guns N' Roses in 1997 and spent around two years working with the band during the early Chinese Democracy sessions. He co-wrote the album's eventual title track, although his drum parts were later rerecorded after his departure.
Freese has since built a career rivalling Buckethead's in its scope, appearing on hundreds of records and working with everyone from Sting and Devo to Nine Inch Nails and Foo Fighters. His versatility has made him one of the industry's most sought-after session drummers, alongside numerous high-profile band memberships and touring stints.
When Gilby Clarke joined Guns N' Roses in 1991 as the replacement for rhythm guitarist Izzy Stradlin, he reportedly had just a week to learn around 50 songs before hitting the road. After pulling off that remarkable feat, Clarke played on 1993's The Spaghetti Incident?, but his stint ended as the band began to fracture. He left in 1994.
Clarke later recalled that Axl Rose wanted to take Guns N' Roses in a different direction, one that he, Slash and Duff McKagan weren't part of. The seasoned musician has gone on to release solo albums and work with Slash's Snakepit, Heart, MC5, Nancy Sinatra and others.
Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal joined Guns N' Roses as lead guitarist in 2006 and remained with the band until 2014. His distinctive fretless guitar can be heard throughout Chinese Democracy, and he toured extensively with the group around the world.
Outside GNR, Thal has enjoyed a remarkably varied career, playing with progressive supergroup Sons of Apollo, Art of Anarchy and Whom Gods Destroy, as well as performing with Asia. He's also a prolific solo artist, producer and educator, teaching music production at SUNY Purchase College and running international Bumblefoot Music Camps.
Part of the classic Guns N' Roses lineup, Steven Adler took over from original drummer Rob Gardner in 1985 and went on to play on Appetite for Destruction. His hard-hitting style helped drive the band's early sound, but escalating addiction issues increasingly affected his playing.
After a brief dismissal and reinstatement, Adler was formally fired in July 1990. He later sued the band for wrongful termination, settling out of court in 1993 for $2.25 million (£1.7m) plus 15% of royalties from music recorded before his departure.
Slash recruited Matt Sorum to fill Adler's shoes after seeing him drum with The Cult. He played on Use Your Illusion I, Use Your Illusion II and The Spaghetti Incident?, plus every date of the mammoth 194-show Use Your Illusion Tour. Before GNR and The Cult, Sorum had also drummed for Tori Amos' short-lived synthpop band Y Kant Tori Read.
The star drummer was fired in 1997 after an argument with Axl Rose, but later reunited with Slash and Duff McKagan in Velvet Revolver, winning a Grammy for Slither. He now leads all-star supergroup Kings of Chaos.

DJ Ashba joined Guns N' Roses in 2009, replacing Robin Finck as one of the band's lead guitarists. Although he never appeared on a GNR studio album, he toured extensively with the group until his departure in 2015. Away from the band, Ashba is best known as a founding member of Sixx:A.M. alongside Mötley Crüe's Nikki Sixx, while his earlier credits include BulletBoys and Beautiful Creatures.
Ashba has also released solo material and built a parallel career as a songwriter and producer, working with artists including Neil Diamond and Mötley Crüe.
A childhood friend of Axl Rose, Izzy Stradlin co-founded Hollywood Rose before helping form Guns N' Roses in 1985. The rhythm guitarist became a key songwriter, co-writing classics including Sweet Child o' Mine, Paradise City and You Could Be Mine, as well as penning Patience.
Disillusioned by the band's escalating chaos and determined to stay sober, Stradlin quit during the Use Your Illusion Tour in late 1991. He later formed Izzy Stradlin and the Ju Ju Hounds and pursued a prolific solo career, though he has occasionally reunited with his former GNR bandmates for live appearances.
Dizzy Reed joined Guns N' Roses in 1990 as the band's first full-time keyboardist. His piano, organ and synths went on to feature heavily on Use Your Illusion I and II. Reed has remained through every subsequent incarnation of GNR, making him its longest-serving member after Axl Rose and the only non-original musician to span the band's peak years and modern revival.
Away from GNR, Reed has toured with the Psychedelic Furs and played with supergroup The Dead Daisies, while also fronting Hookers & Blow. His debut solo album Rock 'N Roll Ain't Easy arrived in 2018.
Ole Beich's replacement, Duff McKagan became Guns N' Roses' bassist in 1985, remaining through the band's spectacular rise before leaving in 1997 and eventually rejoining in 2016. During GNR's controversial peak, he and Slash publicly objected to the racist and homophobic lyrics in One in a Million.
After acute alcohol-induced pancreatitis forced him to get sober in 1994, McKagan studied finance and became a notably savvy investor, putting money into Seattle companies including Starbucks, Microsoft and later Amazon. His post-GNR career has also included Velvet Revolver, Loaded, solo albums, books and the musician-focused wealth management firm Meridian Rock.
Together with Axl Rose, Slash is the member most synonymous with Guns N' Roses. His top hat, curls and Gibson Les Paul are inseparable from the band's image. The music icon replaced founding guitarist Tracii Guns in 1985 and helped define hits including Sweet Child o' Mine and November Rain.
After leaving GNR in 1996, Slash found success with Slash's Snakepit, Velvet Revolver and his solo career before rejoining the band in 2016. His pop-culture reach is wide, even extending to the 2023 Barbie movie, where he played guitar on Ryan Gosling's I'm Just Ken.
Since co-founding Guns N' Roses in 1985, Axl Rose has remained the band's one constant, his incredible voice and volatile stage persona making him one of rock's most recognisable frontmen. But he's also weathered his fair share of controversy and bandmate conflict.
Still, after steering the group through the long-delayed Chinese Democracy, Rose reunited with Slash and Duff McKagan in 2016 and even filled in for Brian Johnson on an AC/DC tour. Rose's position at the top reflects four decades at the centre of GNR, with bumper royalties and hugely lucrative touring providing substantial income streams.
