Charlie Sheen: $10 million (£7m)
Charlie Sheen is often associated with the Brat Pack, a group of rabble-rousing young actors who starred in cult coming-of-age films in the 80s. Sheen, now 55, become one of the most recognisable faces of the decade thanks to roles in Platoon and Young Guns. After starring in the hit sitcom Two And A Half Men, he was one of the highest-paid actors on TV, his fortune at one point exceeding $150 million (£109m). However, Sheen's troubled personal life means he's been largely blacklisted from the entertainment industry. Today, his once-vast wealth is thought to have dwindled to around $10 million (£7m).

Kim Basinger: $20 million (£14m)
Kim Basinger is an actor, singer, and model, whose big-screen breakthrough came as James Bond girl Domino in 1983's Never Say Never Again. In 1989, she appeared in her highest-grossing film to date, Tim Burton's Batman, which made $400 million (£290m). Various Playboy appearances also proved profitable. But despite her success, Basinger has been plagued by financial woes. After buying an entire town and pulling out of the film Boxing Helena, she filed for bankruptcy in 1993. She recovered thanks to high-profile modelling campaigns and roles in films such as L.A Confidential, for which she won an Oscar, and 8 Mile. She is worth an estimated $20 million (£14m) today.

Kathleen Turner: $20 million (£14m)
Famous for her distinctive voice, Kathleen Turner was a femme fatale of 80s cinema. On screen, she's arguably best known for starring in Romancing the Stone in 1984 and Peggy Sue Got Married in 1986. Turner has also worked as a voice actor, lending her sultry tones to the cartoon Jessica Rabbit in Who Framed Roger Rabbit?. In the 90s her career was impacted by severe rheumatoid arthritis, but these days Turner, who is 67 and currently in remission, does a lot of charity work, smaller projects, and activism and is worth a reputed $20 million (£14m).

Kirstie Alley: $40 million (£29m)
Kirstie Alley is probably best known for playing Rebecca Howe in the TV sitcom Cheers, but she made her film debut in Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan in 1982. Starring in the Look Who's Talking films also made Alley, now 70, a household name. Latterly, the actor has turned to reality TV, making a number of shows that focused on her body image and disordered eating. She has also appeared on Dancing With The Stars and Celebrity Big Brother, coming second in both competitions. A long-time Scientologist like Tom Cruise, Alley is reportedly worth $40 million (£29m) today.

Glenn Close: $50 million (£36m)
Before she hit the big time on the silver screen, Glenn Close was an acclaimed theatre actor, winning her first Tony Award for The Real Thing in 1984. Throughout the 80s and 90s, she was a much-acclaimed fixture of the London and New York stage scenes, but also found time to star in some very successful films. These included Fatal Attraction, in which Close famously played the role of 'bunnyboiler' Alex Forrest. Later projects included 101 Dalmatians, Damages, and Albert Nobbs, a period drama which Close co-wrote as well as starred in. At 74, she is considered one of the most adaptable actors of her generation and has a net worth of around $50 million (£36m).

Christopher Walken: $50 million (£36m)
Thanks to his distinctive delivery, Christopher Walken's voice is world-famous. Although he's a popular subject for lighthearted celebrity impersonations, Walken, 78, is a serious star, known for gritty films such as The Deer Hunter and The Dogs of War. He has a cult following among fans and is famous for playing villains with panache. The secret to his success? Walken believes it's the fact he doesn't have children, which means he can spend his estimated $50 million (£36m) fortune on himself!

Sigourney Weaver: $60 million (£43m)
Sigourney Weaver is synonymous with the Alien franchise, playing the lead role of Ellen Ripley from 1979 to 1997. During the 80s, she was a highly sought-after lead actor, often considered a pioneer of female protagonists in sci-fi. More leading gigs followed in Gorillas in the Mist, Ghostbusters and, most recently, Avatar. Weaver does a lot of charity work and although her extraterrestrial fighting days might be behind her, the actor, now 71, is reportedly worth $60 million (£43m).

Michael J. Fox: $65 million (£47m)
Michael J. Fox was the star of two huge 80s hits, the sitcom Family Ties and, of course, the Back to the Future trilogy. The latter has a fanatical following and the first film brought in $381.1 million (£276m), making it the highest-grossing film of 1985. The same year, Fox also starred in Teen Wolf. Later in his career, he starred in Spin City and featured in a few episodes of Scrubs and Designated Survivor. Fox was diagnosed with early-onset Parkinson's disease when he was just 29 and, while he's said it "sucks", has continued to work as much as possible. Now aged 60, he's thought to be worth around $65 million (£47m).

Meg Ryan: $85 million (£61m)
Meg Ryan appeared in minor film roles and on TV in the early 80s before getting her big break in When Harry Met Sally opposite Billy Crystal in 1989. Her wholesome girl-next-door persona made her an instant hit with audiences, turning her into a popular leading lady in romcoms such as You've Got Mail and Sleepless in Seattle. Ryan, 59, directed her first film Ithaca in 2015 and has since concentrated on independent projects. She's worth an estimated $85 million (£61m).

Rob Lowe: $100 million (£72m)
Another member of the so-called Brat Pack, Rob Lowe was an 80s heartthrob and teen idol who came to prominence in St Elmo's Fire, The Outsiders, and Class. His party animal lifestyle was extensively covered in the press and by 1990 he'd given up alcohol and hasn't touched it since. Following Lowe's decision to stay sober, he found success in The West Wing opposite Stockard Channing. Most recently, he has appeared in long-running comedy Parks and Recreation and the podcast Literally! With Rob Lowe. He's thought to have a net worth of $100 million (£72m).

Dustin Hoffman: $100 million (£72m)
Dustin Hoffman’s breakthrough role was as Benjamin Braddock in The Graduate back in 1967. After a series of hits in the 1970s, Hoffman took a three-year break from film acting and returned to the screen with a glittering comeback in Tootsie in 1982. His biggest film of the decade was 1988’s Rain Man, in which he played alongside Tom Cruise. With a number of new releases on the horizon and a lifetime achievement award under his belt, it’s no surprise that Hoffman, 84 today, is worth around $100 million (£72m).

Drew Barrymore: $125 million (£90.4m)
Part of the famous Barrymore acting family, Drew Barrymore, 46, found fame as a child actress in 1982's E.T. It became the highest-grossing film of the decade, making $619 million (£447m) worldwide. She became the youngest person ever to guest-host Saturday Night Live at the age of just seven. Like many child stars, Barrymore struggled with her mental health as a teenager, but went on to become one of Hollywood's most in-demand actresses. In 2021, she announced that she's taking an indefinite hiatus from acting. Over her 30-year career, she’s racked up an estimated $125 million (£90.4m) in earnings.

Bill Murray: $140 million (£101m)
Bill Murray (left) shot to fame in the 80s after playing Peter Venkman, a spectre-bashing rogue in 1984 hit Ghostbusters. It was the highest-grossing film of the year, making Murray – who also found fame on the sketch show Saturday Night Live – a household name. Known for his deadpan delivery, his acting and comedy career has spanned decades with hits such as Meatballs, Groundhog Day, Lost in Translation, and The Jungle Book. According to sources, Murray, 70, is worth $140 million (£101m) today.

Meryl Streep: $160 million (£115m)
Meryl Streep has three Academy Awards under her belt and no fewer than 18 nominations. From Mamma Mia to The Iron Lady and Death Becomes Her to The Devil Wears Prada, Streep has starred in some of the biggest films of the last 30 years. But it was Kramer vs. Kramer (1979) and Sophie's Choice (1982) that put her on the map. Winning her first Oscar for playing the eponymous Sophie, Streep went from failing her King Kong audition to becoming one of the most respected actors of her generation. At 72, she's today worth a cool $160 million (£115m).

Jane Fonda: $200 million (£144m)
Award-winning actor Jane Fonda is the daughter of Hollywood legend Henry Fonda, so showbiz is in her blood. Fonda, 82, made her Broadway debut in 1960 and went on to star in some of the biggest films of the 70s and 80s, including a role alongside her father in On Golden Pond in 1981. She was also famous for her exercise videos. In 1982, Jane Fonda's Workout became the highest-selling home video, selling more than a million copies. She released two new workout films on DVD in 2010. Now worth around $200 million (£144m), Fonda is still an active actor, writer, and activist.

Eddie Murphy: $200 million (£144m)
By the end of the 80s, Eddie Murphy was Hollywood's biggest box office star. This achievement was partly thanks to Murphy's roles in Saturday Night Live and smash-hit films including Trading Places and Beverly Hills Cop. As well being a high-profile actor, Murphy was also a mega-succsesful stand-up comedian, and his show Eddie Murphy Raw grossed $50 million (£36m) when it was released on film in 1987. He moved to more family-friendly endeavours in the 90s and 2000s, most notably voicing Donkey in the Shrek series. Today, Murphy's thought to be worth $200 million (£144m).

Demi Moore: $200 million (£144m)
One of the highest-paid female actors in the 1980s and 90s, Demi Moore was an influential campaigner for equal pay in Hollywood. She starred in Brat Pack favourites Blame It on Rio (1984) and St Elmo’s Fire (1985), before appearing opposite Patrick Swayze in Ghost in 1990, arguably her most famous role. When you think of Michelle Pfeiffer, Grease 2 and Catwoman might spring to mind – but the actor has a varied repertoire under her belt. Grease 2 was her first major role in 1982 and, although the film was a flop, it put Pfeiffer on the map. Her fame was cemented by her breakout role in Scarface the following year. Consistently voted as one of the most beautiful women in the world, Pfeiffer wanted fewer "bimbo" roles, which she found in films such as Dangerous Liaisons and The Fabulous Baker Boys. Now 63, she has continued to land major parts and her net worth is thought to be $250 million (£181m).

Bruce Willis: $250 million (£181m)
Bruce Willis might have kickstarted his career on stage, but during the 1980s he became a fixture on the silver screen. He’s appeared in more than 70 films but his most famous role is arguably that of John McClane in the cult action series Die Hard. The first Die Hard film grossed $140.8 million (£102m) wordlwide when it was released in 1988, and has since been followed by four spin-off films between 1990 and 2013. Willis, 66, reprised his role throughout the franchise. He is currently worth an estimated $250 million (£181m).

Harrison Ford: $300 million (£217m)
Many of the richest 80s stars appeared in films that spawned lucrative franchises. Enter Harrison Ford, who shot to prominence in the Indiana Jones and Star Wars series. Although he's had some flops, such as 1999's Random Hearts, his 2015 return to the role of Han Solo in Star Wars: The Force Awakens was a huge hit. Ford, 78, is today worth an estimated $300 million (£217m).

Michael Douglas: $350 million (£253m)
Michael Douglas shot to prominence in the 1970s after an award-winning performance in the crime drama The Streets of San Francisco. He also made his production debut with One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. But many of his most iconic roles came in the 80s, from Jack T. Colton in 1984's action-packed Romancing the Stone to Dan Gallagher in Fatal Attraction. This was despite a serious skiing accident in 1980 that overshadowed his career for a couple of years. Douglas, 76, has said he enjoys acting because “you can be a child”, while producing allows him to focus on business. It’s clear that both endeavours have proved profitable, as Douglas is thought to be worth $350 million (£253m) today.

Arnold Schwarzenegger: $400 million (£290m)
Before becoming a film star, Austrian-born Arnold Schwarzenegger was a bodybuilder who competed in the Mr Universe and Mr Olympia competitions. Despite his supposedly 'funny accent', Schwarzenegger's huge physique and onscreen presence landed him starring roles in Conan the Barbarian in 1982 and, more lucratively, the Terminator franchise. A host of other successful films followed, ranging from sci-fi favourite Total Recall to the more family-friendly Kindergarten Cop. Arnie, now 74, later moved into politics and served as the Governor of California from 2003 to 2011. All that work clearly paid off because he is reportedly worth $400 million (£290m).

Sylvester Stallone: $400 million (£290m)
Sly Stallone is one of the only actors to have starred in a box office number one in six consecutive decades. Since becoming a global superstar in the franchises Rambo and Rocky, which totalled 14 films and more than $2 billion (£1.4bn) in box office revenues between them, the Hell's Kitchen, Manhatten native hasn't stopped. Stallone, 75 – who received 10 Oscar nominations for his breakthrough role in Rocky in 1976 – has appeared in almost 100 films and is thought to be worth a staggering $400 million (£290m).

Mel Gibson became one of the most sought-after leading men of the 80s after starring in Lethal Weapon. One of 11 siblings, Gibson started out on Australian TV before returning to America to seek his showbiz fortune. As well as starring in a string of commercial hits, he's made money from producing and directing. In 1995, Braveheart – which he produced, directed, and starred in – earned him four Oscars, while The Passion of the Christ was also a hit. Despite a controversial personal life that stunted his career in the 2000s, Gibson is now thought to be worth $425 million (£307m).

Tom Cruise is like the Duracell bunny of action heroes, still doing is own high-octane stunts at 59 years old. He grew up poor in New York but is now worth a staggering $600 million (£436m), making him one of the highest-paid actors in the world. Cruise made his breakthrough in Risky Business in 1983, before Top Gun cemented his international fame. The Mission: Impossible franchise in the 90s turned out to be seriously lucrative and he's also excelled in more dramatic films such as Eyes Wide Shut. For over 30 years, Cruise has been considered one of the most powerful men in Hollywood, and with reports suggesting he could soon star in the first film shot in space, he shows no sign of stopping.
