I'm fortunate enough to have 3600 to invest in a stocks and shares ISA. I was going to go for a FTSE tracker type, because I don't want hassle of stockpicking. I can hold the stocks for at least 5 years I think, maybe 10, so is that long enough to not have to worry about current conditions? I've only got until April to decide.

5 years is enough for a FTSE tracker because of the spread of risk. I would suggest an All-Share Tracker rather than FTSE100.

By the way, the limit isn't £3,600 for a Shares ISA. It is £7,200 less up to £3,600 in a Cash ISA.

A stocks and shares ISA wont give you any real tax benefit since your investment is not likely to generate a capital gains tax bill by the time you decide to sell. The key is to pick a tracker with the lowest charges as this will improve your return significantly over 10 years especially if you pick accumulation units which reinvest the income for you.

Legal and general have low charges on their trackers which are worth checking out since ive just invested with them myself the last few months.
