why do some savings institutions only allow sole accounts.

    The question is a surprise to me because I don't have that problem. However, some types of investment, such as ISAs or pensions, have to have sole accounts.

    Could you supply some examples, please?

    There are some of the smaller deposit takers who only want sole accounts. I am guessing that they find the admin of sole/joint authority to be more trouble than it is worth to them with their stripped down offerings.

    This is only a guess but I reckon its a cost thing.
