Am I obliged to pay for a full TV licence if I live in an area (Northwood) that doesn't get BBC channels?

My flat is apparently on the margins of two broadcasting areas. The BBC reception is erratic. BBC1 is usually quite unwatchable, with no colour, very grainy and no sound. Channel 5 is not available at all.

I think you pay a TV license because you have equipment that could pickup TV signals, not because you can.

I think you would have to pay full price, yes.

Surely you would use cable or Freesat.

I'm sure TMFMotorRacer is correct. If you have a TV you need a license.

Lots of people say things like "I only watch ITV" but that cuts no ice with license enforcement people!

I'm afraid paucity of service does not excuse you from TV licence fees. I work away from home a lot, but despite the fact that I pay TV licence for my home television, I'm expected to pay a second time for my room in the shared accommodation at work. This would be more palatable if the BBC were not responsible for broadcasting cack for 95% of the time.

The licence is not to receive BBC. It is a licence to instal Broadcast Receiving Equipment. So you have to pay even if you have no aerial and only get satellite or cable.

Perhaps you need a better aerial or to point it at another mast. Bear in mind that some masts require aerials to have elements horizontally and others require them to be vertical. Are there any repeater stations in the area?

    You are on-line.

You can use the bbc iplayer to receive streamed programming.

You must have a TV licence
