Would an unpaid mobile phone bill affect my boyfriend's credit score?

We've just applied for a mortgage and it has been referred to the underwriters due to a missed payment. We tried accessing his credit score on the experian site but it'll take a couple of days to get the information. They wouldn't say if the missed payment was on my record or his, but i already have a mortgage with the same company and there was a late payment last year which was quickly sorted out. Is it only problems with financial products that can affect a credit score, or can it be with all kinds of bills?
