renting

I'm unsure if I am able to rent the flat I've bought to my daughter who is on benefits including housing benefit. Glad of some adveice.

    If she is on housing benefits, they will want to make sure that the rent is a fair rent. That would be the case even if she wasn't your daughter.

    Quite understandable re the rent, but it does sounds dooable she is living in a grotty one bed at the moment suffering from depression and I want to get her out, thanks Mike

    It might be wise to discuss this or have your daughter discuss this with your local council advisor.

    When I was on Job seekers allowance, I was living in a house owned by my father , and was told that as I was a relative I would not be able to claim back any 'rent'.

    It might be different if you have a formal tenancy agreement and your daughter is not already residing in the house, but you should check first as I don't think the council like paying rent to relatives who would have let the person stay there for free anyway if benefits were refused.

    There are housing benefit rules governing such arrangements.

    One of the questions on the HB application form asks if the applicant is related to the landlord. Check with the local authority and get their advice in writing if you are told it is OK!
