If an employee asks for 2 days off to attend hospital for checks, should I treat it as sick or annual leave?

As the owner of a small business, I don't have any policies regarding taking time off work, but would like to be fair and consistent. Thanks

If it has been recommended by a doctor to investigate a possible health problem then I would consider it as sickness.

If the matter was cosmetic or unnecessary then I wouldn't.

If it was something like an MOT then maybe go 50/50.

You need to be consistent with previous applications. In the absence of rules then precedents would create them.

I would suggest that you set down a policy for situations like this and I agree with Mike that "sickness" would be the best route. Could you possibly ask for advice or guildance from the Federation of Small Businesses? You could then ensure that all parties are clear about what happens should this arise again.
