School asking to pay to take artwork home?

My grandchildren go to a local authority school.

The parents have been asked to pay if they want to take any of their art projects home (this amounts to a clay tile, felt puppet - nothing too extravagant)

If the parents don't pay then the kids can still participate, but are not allowed to take items home, but the school will dispose of them. Has anyone heard of anything like this?

    Yes.

Unless it is paid for, it remains the property of the school for them to do with as they please. It seems vindictive as destruction would lose them the value anyway but if they allowed them to go home no one would pay and the school needs the money.

This is the case at my son's junior and secondary school. They are constantly finding ways to get money out of parents, some who really can't afford it but cough up so children aren't upset/embarrassed.

    Thanks.

I understand the school needs the money... but maybe so do the parents.

I thought the outcome would be that parents will pay for the artwork but will be short of cash for other school fund raisers. Not the outcome the school was hoping to achieve?

I have never heard the like - my reaction would be either to pay for it by withdrawing any other financial support I was already providing to the school, including any PTA volunteering I was doing and doing so VERY loudly, OR demand that my kids took no further part in such activities thus making the school find alternative supervision/activity for them.

Goodness me, that does seem ridiculous. I could understand it if the school were going to display the items or use them as examples for other students, but if they are just going to dispose of them, then that appears to me to be a cynical way to extract money from parents. On occasion, my daughter's primary school asked for a contribution to a particular activity if the materials were particularly expensive but even if this wasn't the case, she was always allowed to bring her work home. I would ask this to be raised at the next PTA meeting or perhaps you could approach a school govenor to bring the matter up on your behalf. I too would be very annoyed about this.
