Is the Carbon Advisory Council legitimate?

I have been cold called from a company called the Carbon Advisory Council, they say they are a British specialist financial company but the telephone number had a Spanish prefix.

I am thinking of investing into carbon credits with them and I have been told I can invest for just over 2k. To do this however I must first sign up to HiFX International Payments [www.hifx.com] and I wanted to get some advise from you guys if this company is genuine. I am a little worried that if they don't have a bank account themselves then they may not be genuine?

Their website refers to it being Swiss and the code is Swiss (+41).

They are not on the FSA Register.

The caller said that they were calling from London? However if they are not on the FSA register then this has confirmed my suspicions for me. So far the contact I have spoken with at the carbon advisory council has had quite an aggressive approach and of course I did not want to do anything before I conducted some research first.

    Thanks for your answer MikeGG1

    Hi Mike,

Just to clarify the purchase of carbon credits is a spot trade similar to buying a commodity like oil or silver so does not need FSA authorisation.

Just make sure your funds go though FSA authorised agents/solictors in the UK or you wont be covered, also check the CER/VERs will be on the central carbon registry if not why not? plus entry of just 2k is very low normally about 5k .

To be sure only go though firms that do SIPP approved carbon credits.

    Tristan.

    All,

I've just seen this posting and wanted to alert any Lovemoney users that HiFX has never had any kind of releationship with the Carbon Advisory Council. Further more anybody thinking of giving the Carbon Advisory Council any money should read the alert below from the FSA.
