I'm self employed and have just settled the bill at my (private) Dentist for substantial work that came to just over £600.

Knowing some companies offer Dental as part of the salary package I was wondering whether I'm able to offset this cost as part of my business expenditure? After all in my line of work I couldn't function without teeth! Any info appreciated. Paul

You could make some kind of case if you had lost/damaged some teeth in the line of duty at work - a high wire act, holding on with your teeth maybe., but if no direct link, then I think that HMRC would find it hard to chew over that one -excuse the pun.

For the future, you might look at an insurance package that includes dentistry and try that one for size with them - but I am still doubtful - you need a solid link between teeth and work.

The cost of the Dental Insurance through work is a taxable benefit, so that wouldn't work, unless the damage was caused as a consequence of your work. Then it could be claimed as a business expense.

The popularity of Dental Insurance through work, despite the income tax levied, is that group insurance rates are much cheaper than individual policies and they don't have pre-existing conditions and there is no National Insurance levied on the premiums.

Sorry, I missed off one possibility. If you are a model then some cosmetic dental work could be regarded as a business expense.

Many thanks for the replies, I knew it was a long shot but worth asking anyway. My business is decorating and property maintenance, think I'd struggle adding modeling to my portfolio!

    Cheers

So the finished product has to look good rather than you!
