Should I wait until after Xmas? Are there still 'January sales', or do they now all happen pre xmas? Obviously VAT goes up too...

The VAT change is minor by comparison with price fluctuations. It will only change the price by 2.1%. About a tenner or less.

The main price change occurs when new models are introduced and the old models are discounted. Unless you have a very high specification requirement, which would be unusual for a private purchase, the old model should be quite sufficient for current and future needs for some time.

You could well find new and old on sale together. Go for the cheaper.

There'll definitely be good offers come Boxing Day, where higher performing models will see a significant discount. But it depends what you want - if you're after something £300-£400 you may as well buy now. For £400 or more I'd consider waiting. It's less than three weeks away anyway.
