How do I monitor the performance of my pension?

Does anyone have any practical advice on how I should monitor the performance of my pension? I keep reading articles on the importance of keeping an eye on the performance of your pension fund(s) but I haven't a clue what to look for! Should I compare the returns against a particular Index, or maybe the RPI? Is there a general "rule of thumb" or have I got the wrong end of the stick altogether? I am concerned because I currently contribute into a company pension but, through ignorance, I've never checked its performance. How can I tell if the funds my pension is invested in are "good" or "bad"? Thanks in advance for ploughing through my many questions!
