What should I do about my deposit?

I was in a house for two years, the first year my deposit was put into the dps scheme, about a year ago my landlord initiated the return of the deposit, as I had forgotten the ID numbers and had to get the account details from 4 other people i took a while to get it back. I assumed my landlord would start a new scheme once we had paid them so didn't rush with the return, then they pestered me so I hurried up. To keep things simple I put the landlords bank details on the deposit return form so the money went directly to them. A week of so after they had the money returned I asked if they had started a new scheme as I hadn't recieved a letter. They said they did it ages ago, before the deposit was return and I realised that's why they hurried me along. I thought I must have forgotten getting a letter. The it occurred they may have put a different person as the head of the deposit so I contacted them again to confirm the deposit was in my name and they said I was. It is now the time for my deposit return and I am leaving the property. I waited two weeks after the end of the tenancy for a letter about the deposit and received nothing, after contacting the landlord they asked me for my bank account to send the deposit to ad sounded like they wanted to charge me some money. If the deposit was protected used the dps as they originally told me twice, I wouldn't need to give them my account details? I asked this to them and they have not been in contact for 2 days. I emailed the dps asking if the deposit had been put into the scheme 5 days ago and am still waited for a reply. If it turn out the deposit was not put in a scheme what should I do? Thanks
