Random question about frogs!

Hi all, I realise this may not be the place for this query but I know there are some keen gardeners that may be able to help.

I have a frog living in my garden, we are around a mile away from the river and Im quite sure nobody in my area (myself included) has a pond. He seems pretty happy living under one of my cucumber plants. I know he has been in my garden at least 3 months and if I'm honest I quite like having him here!

Just wondering what, if anything, I can do to keep him happy and healthy.

Also, any ideas how he got there?? Should I take him down to the river?

    You could install a pond!

Just do what you're doing - leave him to it! Frogs don't really live in ponds, they just use them in mating season for their eggs (although they also don't say no to them during warm weather as it helps cool them off).

They spend most of their lives on land in a damp place - in this case under a cucumber plant. Depending on the type of frog, he might be with you for another month or more as some frogs also hibernate on land, usually under stones, in compost heaps, in leaf litter, or in a wee nook/cranny in walls.

On the other hand, he might try migrating to the nearest water to hibernate there which will position him perfectly for the spring - when mating season hits, he'll have his water "patch" ready for any females that happen to drop by!

Hope this helps - Kat :-)

You need to keep it if you can because the eat lots of nasties for free.

Sink a tub into the ground somewhere near with some water plants in it and hopefully it will use it. You don't need a proper pond.

If it doesn't use your 'pond' you can always import some frogspawn from elsewhere which will be more likely to return to it for mating. It would be their home base.

Awesome stuff, thanks all! Unfortunately I'm renting at the moment otherwise I would have a pond already! I was thinking of installing a little water feature though, a fountain or the like. I guess I need to make it big enough for a frog and some plants now!

This is the closest I can get to having a pet while I rent :)

    How is Kermit?

Here are some instructions on how to make a toad home (I'm sure it will suit frogs too) out of a plant pot.

Thanks for that bellini, quite similar to the suggestion by MikeGG1, might give it a go!
