how to find out if old shares are worth anything?

hi i have some old shares that i have just found and was wondering what the simpliest was of finding out if they are worth anything. they are paper share certificates. is there a online service that maybe i can type in the certificate number? if dread that if i go to a bank and get them to do it the little money that they might be worth will end up in their pocket..i have done some googling but it is not clear exactly what i have to do.. any help would be greatly appreciated... thanks
