How important is the look of the credit card?

When you're getting a new credit card, how important is the look of the plastic? Colour, if it looks fun and vibrant or perhaps signifies a high-flyer?

Only curious as my bf and I were talking about this last night.

Obviously the deal's the most important thing when applying, but if the card is quirky or personalised, it adds a bit of fun. I liked the shape of my Mint card :)

If it is bright or quirky in any way it will encourage you to spend on it, which is not a good idea.

Sorry to be mundane but a credit card is a tool to be kept on a tight rein.

    Not at all important.

Credit cards are full of these traps. After all they are called 'credit cards' which sound nice, rather than 'long term high interest debt cards' which doesn't.

You don't become a high flyer by having a specific sort of credit card. Real high fleyers use whatever card gives them the most cash back and clear their balances each month.

People need to stop thinking ths sort of thing is 'fun'.

Credit cards should really be called 'Debt cards', which would take away all of the glamour. They should say 'are a fool?' everytime you expose them to day light and they should make you wake up with a hang-over and when you look in the mirror they should make you look like your dad, only with worse fashion sense...if they did all of that, they would sensibly reflect their true role in life. They are the root of all evil and they make saturated fats look good.

Apart from that, yeah, choose a nice looking one ;o)

I am told that I am "high flyer" in the eyes of some but must say I have not really noticed myself.

I have some fancy coloured plastic and what matters is that it delivers what I want when I need it.

What does it say about me ? Quite a lot but not to those I hand it too in shops, etc. The real data is that lwhich ies with the issuer. As with store loyalty cards the real image of the card holder can only be read off from the data of the all of transactions carried out - type, nature and value. The rest is an illusion to persuade people they want the plastic so that their personal details can be captured and exploited, and often with them paying for the privilege of having their data turend to "gold" or "p"atinum" - indeed whatever forms of currency takes your fancy.

Thanks for all the feedback! Sounds like we're taking a sensible approach, good! From speaking to some friends who work in marketing it seemed like there was a demand out there for cards that I suppose not only delivers into terms of rates - but also applies to the owners aesthetically.

But then again, dangerous having a pretty card if it means you want to use it more!

A few of the American banks now allow you to upload any image/photo you want to be the background for your credit card - not sure if anyone offers that over here. That way you could have a picture of a dog in a scarf or text reading "don't do it you idiot" on your card.
