Parliamentary elections and being outside the UK
Can someone let me know what happens to your voting rights when you are outside the UK. I am a British Citizen. What are the procedures for voting when not in the country.

410You have to be registered to vote.
If you are registered but will be temporarily outside on the day, eg on business or on holiday, then apply for a postal / proxy vote now. See http://www.aboutmyvote.co.uk/how_do_i_vote.aspx
If you are now living abroad but have been a registered voter in the past 15 years (or you have lived in the Uk in the last 15 years, your parents were registered voters but you were too young to register at the time you left the Uk) , see this: http://www.aboutmyvote.co.uk/register_to_vote/british_citizens_living_abroad.aspx
If you are serving abroad in the armed forces, talk to your Unit Registration Officer.

5If you have been out too long you may have no ronger have any right to vote but still be expected to contribute to taxes etc.
People have short memories. Now we have "representation without taxation (non doms)" and have forgotten about the "No taxation without respresentation" which lost the UK the American colonies.
Which party will show sufficient clarity of vision to finally allow all UK citizens subject to tax in the UK to vote regardless of how long they may have been out of the country?

824It may well be that you wouldn't receive a postal vote form until too late to return it. I have a feeling that they don't use airmail.
A better idea might be to appoint a proxy.
The first step is to be registered to vote and you have until 20 April to do that.
