Do you know if I can claim back any monies my late husband paid into his state pension when I retire or are these contributions lost following death

Do you have a full contribution record for yourself? If not, you can use his contribution record to fill any gaps that you have. That is the situation for the basic state pension. Did you pay the Married Women's reduced rate National Insurance contributions (applicable to pre-1978 marriages)?

There is also pension due in respect of any Second Tier pension that he was not contracted-out of. If he was contracted-out through a pension scheme then that would come from there.

Write to the DWP at Newcastle and quote both your own and his National Insurance numbers and tell them the date of your marriage and the date of his death. They will tell you what you are likely to get.

Also claim widows allowance. This is paid based on your husband's NI contributions.

Information for you. They would be from your husband's contributions.
