I owe £1700 in underpaid income tax from a previous year. HMRC intend to claw it back through PAYE by adjusting my tax free amount.
I pay some tax @ 40%. If I up my AVCs to an amount which brings my taxable income down below £37400 I will pay none at 40% notwithstanding their adjustment. If I did that for the whole year would HMRC consider it paid or do they have to receive actual tax paid from me?
