I attempted to deposit 200 pounds in the atm inside my local nationwide branch today. the machine accepted my card and then my money. it then returned my card specifying that it could not proceed with the transaction but did not return my money. the money has not been deposited in my account. the assistant would not open the machine to check the balance she said that she would do this in the morning. any advise if she says the money is not there - the machine did take it

Check if there was a CCTV recording. That should be sufficient proof. Perhaps not how much but that there was a deposit. That should be available in Branch.

There should also be a computer record of the activities leading up to the breakdown. That would probably have to requested from Head Office.

    Good luck

thanks, I'll be over at the branch tomorrow morning at 9am  In event that I do not get my money back I will mention about the CCTV and I will then be contacting Head Office.

It might be better for the Manager to get the computer record. However, I trust it won't be needed.

Please let us know how you get on.

From banking experience, every ATM is balanced at some point during the working day. That's how they know what to 'stock the money' with for the days the bank is closed such as the weekend.

If you've made the claim, it will need to be investigated. I suggest you speak to the manager and then follow it up with a letter.

Does your silence mean you were successful? Or have you not got back yet?

Sorry for butting it - I don't have a better answer than Mike's, I'm just curious as to how the bank dealt with it. When my card got taken by a cash machine a few years back, they just opened it up and there it was. I supposed with cash it must be harder to sort out as it needs to be counted etc.
