what is the best way to run a car

I've had company cars with in one case £3500 tax liability, bought privately new but currently run a 6 year old Rover 2 ltr diesel its cheap to insure & much better of fuel than the 1.4 diesel Fiesta, but it leaks so its damp and smelly . Should I buy new or nearly new? Ive never rated fords since I have bought 1 new and its been poor, but have had 3 new citroens only the last of which was a nuisance. But they loose value, what about the Kia's and Hyundai's ar thay worth thinking about?
