Is anyone a member of a car club in London? Which one is the best value for money or most cost effective?

The answer would depend on what you want to get out of joining one and what car you drive.

I suggest you will get more help if you post here:

It is on the companion site to this one.

Make sure you look at availability local to where you're going to start your journey from most often. Different London boroughs seem to have more of Zipcar than Streetcar and the other way around.

I like Zipcar because they have the most cars close to my house and the annual commitment is lower.

TFL lists one called City Car Club as well (http://www.citycarclub.co.uk/).

My borough council have some sort of deal with Streetcar though I'm not sure of whether it gives you any reductions etc. but something to investigate maybe.

And seeing as I messed up the link in my last post I'll repost it and some others:

    http://www.citycarclub.co.uk

    http://www.connectbyhertz.com

And this site aggregates where all the cars are on one handy map!

I'm a Streetcar member and (agreeing with GrandJury) it's a good idea to shop around for what will work best for you.

Streetcar is very handy for short bookings (i.e. a couple of hours) or if you need a car at the very last minute. But I tend to find that if you need a car for a couple of days or longer and can give plenty of notice, it tends to be far cheaper to use a traditional car hire company.

Yeah, good point from ThatLindsayGuy, whichever one you choose only use it for short journeys. If you need a car for longer and especially if you need to take a car out of london, go for a hire car.

That's because the day rate can get quite high and you'll also find that longer distances incur an extra mileage charge.

I actually have a conspiracy theory that Zipcar is only found in Tory boroughs and Streetcar is only found in Labour boroughs. Either way, if you check your local borough website you might find a slight discount on the joining fees.

Thanks for all your responses everyone, all very useful. I have now joined up with Streetcar as they have the most cars in my area. I checked my council (Hammersmith & Fulham) but unfortunately there was no discount available.

I did manage to get £10 credit on my account as I mentioned that I knew someone else who was a member of Streetcar so we both got £10. That was a nice surprise.
