I've been persuaded to invest £1000 into a HSBC world investment fund on a balanced portfolio. I'm new to the stock market and thought that this would get me into it gradually. I don't need the money anytime soon. Any views on this Investment??

Sorry a bit vague I know but any comment will be appreciated.

From January 4 2010 to February 14 2010 inclusive ("the Sale Period") the annual HSBC Sale is taking place. During the Sale period if you apply for Selected Investment Funds through one of our Financial Planning Managers, or by using our Selected Investment Funds brochure pack, the initial charge will be reduced from 4% to 1% for all lump sum investments (including ISA transfers and top-ups).

The Sale offer is in addition to, and separate of, our special online offer available for investments applied for via this website only.

It sounds as though they are desperate to sell their units, offering these discounts. But the charges will still mount up.

Go for a Low-cost Tracker from Legal & General or Fidelity or an Exchange Traded Fund.

HSBC staff can only tell you about HSBC products so you won't get unbiased advice from them.

You can find out more about trackers in this recent article. I agree with Mike, trackers are probably the right approach for you:

Hi, thanks for the response, can you specify which Legal & Genera ISA Low Cost Tracker should i go for. Medium to high risk and looking to add £50 a month to it with the initial £1000 investment.
