32Fortunately the best acitivites in New York are free - taking a walk across Brooklyn Bridge or taking the Staten Island ferry are both free highlights. Also, the Bronx Zoo is better than the Central Park zoo - though $5 more expensive and harder to get to - they have a red panda!
I tend to find eating out in America is naturally cheaper as its easy to just drink water with your meal for free, not to mention the fact that food is cheaper anyway
We stayed with a friend when we visited New York which isn't a great help. The New York guidebooks insist there are low-cost and decent hostels on Manhattan Island so maybe worth looking into.
When I was last there a friend of a friend who we went out for dinner with grabbed the wine list and ordered Pinot Grigio... from Italy. Needless to say if you're going to drink wine in America and price is a consideration you're better off choosing something Californian.

7I was there in March earlier this year, my flight cost £250 return on BA, it seems the Easter time is really cheap to travel to the States.
I too stayed with friends in Manhattan and family in Queens, I loved Queens much more than Manhattan and it was much cheaper.
http://www.nymag.com was an awesome resource for finding cool places to eat and go out! I regret not eating more from the famous food carts in the city, the time I did, it was delicious and also very cheap. I recommend Cafe Habana http://www.cafehabana.com/
The hostels in Manhattan were also very cheap as my friends stayed there, they said they were really clean and had private room with en suite.

21Karen, you can hire amazing apartments right in the mix for less than a hotel. You arrive and a maid just gives you a key and you're away!
I'll dig out the company.

410I don't know how tight your budget is - you can eat cheaper than any of the following, but they are all good food and good value:

If you don't have kids, this walking tour was brilliant.

If you have teenagers and the sight seeing / museums pall, send them to a movie and go back to the museums in peace :)
The Cloisters is out of the way but well worth a visit (and you can hum along to this on the way http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EbUklDXdH2o)

1Not sure how much your budget is or what you want to do but if your funds will strectch and you want to see a Broadway (or Off-Broadway) show, half price tickets go on sale from just under the Marriot Hotel on Broadway daily from the TKTS booth.
Basically each ticket is $30 (as opposed to $60) for a set list of shows, best to choose a few you are happy to see as your first choice might not be available. Tickets go on sale at 3pm for the evening showing that day only. Get there early as queues build quickly, but don't be too put off if there is a bit of a queue, once the booth opens it moves quickly.
We've done this twice. Once got 2nd row seats for Chicago and last year got tickets to see Xanadu which was fab.
For cheap shopping visit Century 21 (by Ground Zero) which is a huge discount store selling big names and small prices - be warned though, it gets busy and isn't for the faint hearted shopper.
Go and see the Alice in Wonderland statue in Central Park, and the Imagine memorial to John Lennon - then take a walk by the Jacki O resevoiur across Manhattan from east to west, walking is the best way to traverse Manhattan while the subways woosh you up and down.
