Can I claim anything back from fuel company for failing to advise me of the need to increase my direct debits until almost a year has passed ?

In May 2009 I switched from EON to Scottish Power for 'dual fuel'. In October 2009 EON sent their FINAL bill for £609+. I have always paid by Direct Debit, and therefore I queried this enormous bill. Their reply was that the direct debits were insufficient for usage. This accumulated over a whole year and they did not adjust my direct debits. I have never had this sort of debt accumulate & so it came as a great shock, especially as I am on a pension. I now consider them responsible for at least some of this debt as they failed to adjust my direct debits and failed to notify me of the need to increase the monthly direct debits for almost a year . Can I claim anything back from EON fot this error on their part ?
