Does Wii Fit really work?

As the nights are drawing in and I find myself wanting to stay cosy at home, I was wondering if I might be able to make the most of the winter months and reduce my spending by investing in a Wii Fit instead of going to the gym.

Did a quick price check and found a console plus Wii Fit for about £230. Spread over a year, that's roughly £19 per month, less than half the cost of my gym.

The only thing is, I'm a bit sceptical as to whether you can really get results with Wii Fit? Has anyone experienced improved fitness from using it?

Buy it! It's such good fun - really is.

In terms of fitness / weight control it seems to have worked really well for this guy. He lost 15 lbs in 41 days!

I suppose it you take it seriously and do the aerobic and muscle exercises it should tone you quite quickly. But if you tend to stick to the 'fun' slalom games etc that some people do *cough* you'll probably just get better balance - which isn't a bad thing either!

My friend Lee and his wife got Wiifit when it came out. I remember Lee the first week they got it, he was telling me it felt like he had gone to the gym the night before, his body was aching all over.

    It can work.

Wii Fit and games of that ilk are good fun, but if you're used to going to the gym I think you'll be disappointed. The work out is nowhere near as intense. I have EA Active which I think is better than Wii Fit. But I don't think they can really replace the gym experience.

Thanks for your answers - looks like any health benefits are a by product of playing the Wii rather than the overall outcome...

But 'fun' is always a good reason to do something :)

I've heard that the boxing game is pretty good for cardio though!
