What should you do with your card receipts?

I buy most things on debit/credit card so I have entries on my bank statements to keep track of where my money goes - the downside of this being that I get hundreds of card receipts. Currently they collect in boxes and bags all over my house and multiply like Tribbles.

What should I be doing with them? How long are you supposed to keep them? Why do some shops insist on giving you three different pieces of paper to record one transaction?

    Hi there,

From my own personal point of viewr, it largely depends on what I buy as to how long I keep the receipt.

For examle - last year, I bought a large LCD TV. The receipt is in with my Contents Insurance. Same with my Xbox and various items of furniture.

Last weeks' shopping was also paid for by card, and I chucked that receipt in the bin when I did my weekly wallet clearout!

With any purchase that I might need to check, or that is warrantied somehow, I do keep the receipt for the duration of the warranty. An Xbox game, for example, I might keep for a week or two so that I am satisfied the item is 'fit for purpose'.

Regarding the three seperate receipts - I would hazard a guess at card receipt, till receipt and VAT receipt.

It really depends on the type of item it is. Many are just a card transaction voucher. I destroy them as soon as the statement containing them has been checked. They don't contain any more information than the statement.

However, those which are a combined receipt and card voucher and detail the item purchased are kept as long as needed for guarantee purposes. I put them in a 'receipts' drawer once I have checked my statement.

Receipts, I used to keep for the longer of 1 year or the manufacturers warranty. Since the European Directive, I keep them for a minimum of 2 years.

Yeah, completely depends on what it is I've bought. For big expensive things I tend to keep them indefinitely. But if it's lunch I just stuff it in my wallet and throw them away in chunks every week or so.

Sadly, I tend to keep receipts for most things, then destroy the grocery/restaurant ones after I receive my credit card bill.

Now (even sadder) I scan the receipts for the more expensive purchases...

Ohh, I now want to come round and categorise your receipts! I suggest that you keep them in different sections (perhaps 3 boxes?)

#1 for everyday receipts like grocery shopping etc - once you have checked those off your statement they can be destroye

#2 for things you might want to refer to later such as gifts bought for people (in case they want to return them for some reason) or small purchases (I needed to find a receipt for a watch battery that lasted under a year)

#3 for big purchases like TVs, household goods that you will want to keep for a longer period of time.
