How long a contract did you sign and what was the monthly payment?

The problem you are facing is that many phones are said to cost more than what you pay for them. The company recoups the cost of the phone by signing you up to a lengthy contract.

Is this the only debt you have?

I imagine your only choices are to negotiate another contract with O2 or see if another company is prepared to buy the contract from you (if you sign up with them), but again you will be signing another long contract that may be worse than your present deal.

Doesnt sound very fair to me. If the debt is clear then surely the service can resume?

It may be worth contacting OffCom to see if you have a valid complaint to uphold.
