Landlord has not put deposit in a scheme.

My landlord has not protected my deposit (£1000) and has done nothing but cause delays on carrying out maintenance on the property. I will be moving out in one month and have read on the direct.gov website that because he has not protected it I am entitled to 3x the amount. Forums are full of different opinions. The tenancy was a AST and I have been there for just over 6 months. I had texted him on the 7/7 to ask when the deposit would be in the deposit scheme. How do I go about this? and is this certain I will get 3x the amount? Thank you for your responses.
