Wills can be complicated, never used them myself. I used the Will Writing Services London.

My estate is not high value nor complex but I paid a fee. (around about £300 several years ago) This allows you to go back to them (if they are still around) as many times as you want to amend the will at no extra cost.

I have amended my will twice since, reassuring that I had to pay nothing.

I would be wary of anything that says 'Totally Free'.

Are they trying to sell financial products once they have a captive audience? Or they may have add ons eg. storage of the Wills

Or worse still that someone from their organistaion has to be named as executor and that executor is entitled to be paid for the work he/she does (this comes out of your estate). Read Terms VERY CAREFULLY.

I've been looking for some sort of will service & this does look interesting. Their T&Cs say:

We make no charge for any Will completed online. You will not be asked for credit or debit card details and you will not be sent a bill. Although we have made our service as flexible as possible, there are some circumstances under which it is not sensible to try and create a Will online. A few questions will determine whether you fall into this category, and if you do, we will offer to introduce you to a Solicitor who is experienced in making Wills to cover your situation. Such Wills are not free, but we do not want you to go away disappointed Therefore, we have negotiated a special £25 discount off any bespoke Will produced by our panel Solicitor, because we want everyone who visits our site to get something, even if we cannot provide a free Will. Just a few minutes on the create my Will section of our website will determine whether your circumstances are suitable for a free Will, or alternatively a discounted legal service.

So £25 off a will that might cost a few hundred doesn't seem that great a discount to me. And of interest further down they explain they don't do mirror wills due to data protection issues (each person has to log in separately)

Isn't there normally a "make a will" week or month in the autumn? As I recall you could get a free session with a solicitor in exchange for making a donation to charity. Think I might watch out for that instead.

Sounds like they get paid a referral fee from the solicitors.

Presume their motivation is to make sure that 'There are some circumstances under which it is not sensible to create a Will online'

My advice, go through the process, see which firm of solicitors you get referred to, DON'T pay a penny. Then look at your options.

Your Will gets more complicated as you have more beneficiaries and the higher the value of your estate is (i.e. you need to tax plan). For most people with a limited estate a simple Will is usually OK.

Many solicitors will do a 'Fixed Price' as a starting point - just call around (careful of why they say you need to 'add on' bits to your Will, alsom increases the cost). Most Important thing is to make sure you have the Will witnessed correctly (and not by someone who benefits from the gifts etc in the Will).

Why not gets your wills done in November for 'free' with a proper solicitor, if you make a donation to a charity. See http://www.willaid.org.uk/

I MUST DECLARE MY VESTED INTEREST HERE AS THIS IS MY LINE OF WORK

However, I think it is worth explaining that Solicitors make very little money from producing Wills in some cases it is a loss leader. We make most of our money correcting mistakes in homemade and Wills produced by Will writing firms who dissolve their company every year or so.

I strongly advise people to take advantage of Willaid these Wills are drawn up by Solicitors and you are covered by their indemnity insurance should anything be incorrect. Even if you miss this a properly drawn up simple Will should cost no more than £150+VAT for a single and £250+VAT for mirror Wills.

If you compare this to a case I recently dealt with where a Will was produced leaving all the money to someone who had died before the Testator and left an intestacy where I charged £12,000 + VAT to sort the legal issues and £10,000 + Vat was paid to genealogists.

Original saving on Will when it was produced £60. Total cost to estate £25,300.
