Thinking of switching halogen lights to LED. Good idea?

Most of the lights in my home are halogen spotlights and I'm thinking of switching to LED bulbs. It's a fairly expensive change (in terms of upfront cost) so I wonder if anyone else here has done it.

Is the light any good? What kind of savings have you seen on your energy bills?

I always think that with this kind of thing prices will begin to drop sooner rather than later, but may take some time (e.g. Plasma screens)

I have never been sure how good they will be for general lighting, heard that higher wattage are better for this but they then become less cost effective.

Although I would love to do this to save the planet.... I'm holding off for now, until prices drop some more..

I tried to do this and replaced a lot of my halogen bulbs with LED ones which cost £5.00 each.

The light was absolutely dreadful I couldn't see a thing.

If you're going to do it you need to get good quality expensive versions to get anywhere near the light you get from hologen.

If you find LED lights that work well please let me know as I want to replace mine but not so keen on helping the environment i want to sit in the dark.

Thanks for the answers - as with so much in life, I guess I should wait until the quality goes up and the price comes down then.
