What bike to buy??

I am looking at purchasing a bicycle and was hoping to get some advise on which type to buy. I will be using it mainly for road and cycle path use. I have been told a Hybrid is a good choice for what I am looking for, has anyone else got any ideas?? Also if anyone can suggest any specific makes and shops to buy from then that would be much appreciated. Cheers.

Hybrid sounds great! Make sure you take the bike for a test ride before buying, important to make sure your seating position is comfortable.

I bought my Kona bike from Evans a few months ago and the staff has been really helpful. It's handy buying from a chain, in case something breaks down at least there are branches scattered all over.

As a side note, the bike has had a really good spin off effect on my life. Couldn't advocate cycle commuting enough.

    Hi LMMortgageMan,

I couldn't agree more with lovelindstrom -- hybrid is the way to go. I used to commute and do the occasional weekend ridearound on a Giant Escape mountain bike. It was a great bike, easy to ride, but so heavy.

I recently switched to a hybrid (I have a Pinnacle, the Evans own-brand hybrid) and I not only got more bike for my money, but I get a better ride out of it. The bike is lighter, smoother to ride, and, so far, the gears are a lot less sticky than the mountain bike's gears.

Also, in terms of the side-effects of cycling to work, it is SO true: you're taking a bag in anyway so it's easier to pack a lunch; you're out in the fresh air (ok, traffic) and sun (or rain) so you're more alert in the mornings; you're cycling home so it's less tempting to head to the pub; you're riding the tube less (for work and errands) so there's more money in your bank account; you're cycling an hour a day more than you used to so your tummy gets flatter and your clothes fit better!

good luck to you, and report back on which bike you choose!

Can I suggest you head over to www.bikeradar.com and check their forum. They have a section for people who commute by bike and should be able to offer some suggestions.

I'd go straight to cyclesurgery and test ride some. You'll get a good idea of what you are comfortable with. It's also a good place if stuff goes wrong - they are very good at support/repairs once you have the bike.

I have a mountain bike and the beauty of that is you are not limited to one surface - I commute on it and I can go in the woods at the weekend (or whatever.)

    Love bike shops. Jealous.

Before spending money on a bike it may be worth your while ti find out if your company is part of the government's cycle to work scheme - http://www.cyclescheme.co.uk/
