What is the cheapest way to borrow money whist abroad?

I am going away in October and hope to have a small amount of money on a prepayment card but a large portion of our spending will be on credit to be paid off immediatly once we return home - we both have our paydays whilst we are away! I have a santander credit card as this was recommended to me but what else could i do to make sure that I don't get stung with the wide array of charges while I am away? Many thanks in advance :-)
